Multiplayer Elo

Everyone faces everyone

A four-player game creates six head-to-head comparisons. First place beats all three opponents; second place beats two and loses to one; third beats one; fourth loses to all three.

new rating = old rating + K × (average actual score − average expected score)

The expected score for each opponent uses the standard Elo curve. Updates are calculated from pre-game ratings and applied simultaneously.

Relative placement

Comparing different table sizes

A high finish is easier to achieve when only three people are playing. The spreadsheet compensates by increasing every three-player finishing position by 25% before averaging.

relative placement = average(finish × 1.25 in 3P games; finish × 1.00 in 4P games)
3-player game1st → 1.252nd → 2.503rd → 3.75
4-player game1st → 1.002nd → 2.003rd → 3.004th → 4.00

Lower is better. The same calculation is used for players and leaders.
